Textiles

The world of fashion and furnishings provides the context for developing your creative skills in this course and can lead to many career opportunities – not just fashion design. textiles

What will I learn?

You will learn about the world of textiles in its broadest sense. You will study the subject from past traditions through to the 'high tech' developments of today. You will study the different uses and treatment of textiles, whether in the home or in the world of business and high fashion. You will design and make a variety of fabric items which are useful and fun to design and make. These could be clothes, theatre costumes, accessories, furnishings or a piece of textile art.

You will work from drawings and paintings to develop your own design ideas. This may be completed in a sketchbook. You will learn new textile techniques such as weaving, screen printing, batik, silk painting and computer aided design.

What sort of homework will I be set?

Homework tasks support and extend coursework. You may be asked to research and investigate a specified area of fashion or furnishing. This will include drawings and internet research or you may be required to continue with the design work you have begun in class.

What coursework will I need to do?

You will complete projects that will have aspects of research, investigation, design and evaluation as well as making the fabric item. You will complete a different themed project each term. All will have aspects of research, investigation, design and evaluation as well as making a final textile piece. All work you produce will go towards your final grade.

How will my work be assessed?

You will be given an exam paper during the spring term. From this you will develop design ideas for a final piece. You will make the final piece during a timed controlled test.

Your final GCSE grade will depend on:
