What will I learn?

You will be able to learn how to dance and perform to a higher standard through practical lessons that will improve your dance technique in a variety of dance styles. You will learn the skills of how to choreograph your own dances using many starting points.

What sort of homework will I be set?

Homework will be a mixture of practical preparation for dances, research into dancers and choreographers and writing about dances you have made up yourself and seen others perform. The aim of the homework is to support your knowledge and understanding of the work completed in practical and theory classes.

What coursework will I need to do?

Most of the examination is practical coursework. All of your classes will provide you with the skills and knowledge to be able to create your own group dance, perform a set dance and perform in a choreographed duet or group dance.

How will my work be assessed?

You will be given marks for each piece of work that you do, both written and practical. Your final coursework is marked by your teacher, practical and written. Someone from the examination board comes to the school at the end of your two year course and looks at a few examples to check that the teachers marks are correct. There is a short written examination which includes questions about one of the choreographers and their dance works that you have studied over the two years. You will know the dance work and choreographer before the examination and you will be required to compare and contrast this to other professional dance works that have been studied. An additional element to the written paper is good studio practice, in which students will have to answer questions about health and safety in the studio. The written paper is set and marked by the examination board and taken at the end of the two year course.
