What Students Can Study at Key Stage 5

Advanced Level Courses

Kingsmead Sixth Form is able to offer a wide and varied range of A level courses. In addition to the courses outlined below, students are able to take subjects not available through the collegiate system, which allows them to study a subject at a neighbouring school

Art and Design

During Year 12 students complete an enquiry around a theme and complete expressive studies. In Year 13 there is contextual studies and problem solving. Assessment is by examination and coursework.

Art and Design Textiles

This is a course with significant practical elements that will suit students who wish to pursue higher education in the Arts.

Biology

Year 12 includes Foundation Human Health and Disease and Transport. In Year 13, Central Concepts, Growth, Development and Reproduction with Unifying Concepts. Completing both exam and practical work for course.

Business Studies

Over the two years 6 units are covered. In Year 12: Business at Work, Competitive Business Environment & Marketing. In Year 13: Human Resources, Finance and Business Communication Systems. No prior study of this subject is required, just a willingness to complete coursework and examinations.

Chemistry

Over the 2-year course students complete units on Organic plants, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. All students’ complete coursework, practical work and examinations

Dance

The style of dance devised and studied is contemporary based. Written coursework is based around a practical performance.

Drama

This course involves the exploration of practitioners and theory in drama and theatre over time. Assessment is through coursework, practical performance and final exam.

Economics

Students study Markets, and the National Economy at AS followed by investigating working as an Economist, Business and Income, and finally Government Economic Policies. You do not need to have studied this subject before.

English Language

AS involves the study of language and its social contexts. A2 provides the opportunity for editorial writing and language development. Both years require coursework.

English Literature

Shakespeare, poetry and prose form the curriculum in Year 12 followed by Poetry and Drama dating back to the 19th century and pre and post 1914. Work is assessed by coursework and examinations.

Geography

Units over the two years cover both physical and human geography elements. A considerable focus on the course is on the fieldwork and case study research that is written up into coursework assignments.

Graphics

Year 12 involves understanding industrial and commercial practices. Product design forms part of the coursework. Year 13 allows the students to develop more understanding of Design in Society. Completing the course requires coursework, and practical and theory exams.

History

Year 12 is split between Russian and British History and includes a significant piece of coursework. In Year 13 students complete work on the decline of the British Empire.

ICT

Both courses involve developing a range of skills including studying information systems, Information Management Systems, Manipulation, Spreadsheets, and Database Management. Courses have significant coursework and exams.

Maths

The course covers 20 wide-ranging units that fall into the following areas: Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics. This is an exams only course.

Media

The course covers: Image analysis of film, TV, non-fiction, news, adverts, marketing, audience, genre and representation. It involves coursework, examinations and practical work.

Music

This course involves practical elements with studies of set works. It consists of coursework and examinations.

Photography

There is a strong practical element to this course that aims to give students a good understanding of skills

Physical Education (PE)

Topics studied include: Skeletal, Cardio Respiratory Systems with Sports and Culture. Year 13 includes Historical, Sports Psychology and Physiology. The course is evaluated on coursework and an exam.

Physics

In Year 12 Mechanics, Radio Activity, Electric, Thermal, Astro Materials and Particle Physics are studied. In Year 13: Field Forces, Waves and Our Universe. It is assessed on coursework and exams.

Politics

In Year 12 students study electoral systems, voting and politics in the UK. In Year 13 students study American political ideas and policy. The course consists of written exams only.

Psychology

There are three modules in Year 12 covering Cognitive, Developmental, Physiological, Social Psychology , individual Differences and Research Methods. In Year 13 there is a more in depth coverage of selected topics plus Approaches to Psychology. Coursework forms one of the Year 13 modules.

Sociology

In Year 12 students study Family, Education and Theory, followed by Crime, Deviance, and Religion in Year 13. The subject is assessed by coursework and an exam.

Applied Double GCSE Awards and BTECs

Kingsmead Sixth Form is able to offer a total of 7 Applied/BTEC courses for students who have achieved 5 grade D-Es at GCSE. Students must select 2 of the Double Awards that are taught alongside Key Skills and CHRE.

Please note: Many of the Applied courses require students to complete a fortnight of Experience of Work with an appropriate outside organisation. Students are strongly encouraged to find a placement relevant to their course themselves, but those that fail to do so will be allocated one by Enfield Work Experience organisation which they will have to undertake. Failure to successfully complete the fortnight of Experience of Work may result in failing the course.

Applied GCSE: Business

Investigating all aspects of the operations of a business forms the basis of the portfolio work. Students also complete a unit on business finance for the exam unit.

Applied GCSE: Health and Social Care

Understanding the provision of care to the elderly, promoting health and well being and understanding personal development and relationships are the central themes to this course.

Applied GCSE: Information and Communication Technology

Students develop skills in numerous applications by creating a range of documents for specific purposes. Further units study the impact of computers on organisations and society.

Applied GCSE: Leisure and Tourism

All aspects of the industry are examined, including marketing and customer service. Completion of the course is by exam and coursework.

Applied GCSE: Science

This course involves developing scientific skills along with understanding the impact of science on society and in the workplace.

Key Skills, CHRE and Retake GCSEs

All students have the opportunity to follow a Key Skills or Critical Thinking programme of study aiming to develop areas of skills that will support their progression into employment or higher education.

Key Skills: ICT Level 2

Students’ develop skills in a range of Microsoft programmes and the use of the Internet for specific purposes to complete printed work and a multi-choice test. All work supports the students’ other studies.

Citizenship, Heath and Religious Education (CHRE)

Topics covered during CHRE include mental health, drug use, sex education and the study of a range of moral and religious issues.

Critical Thinking

This course allows students to develop skills of thinking creatively, laterally and critically outside of their subject area.
