Hospitality and Catering GCSE

This course has a lot more to offer than simply learning how to cook. It has been designed to give students the opportunity to develop practical skills and extend their knowledge of the hospitality and catering industry and to apply them within a variety of different situations. Success in GCSE Hospitality and Catering can lead on to further study and/or career opportunities in this area. However, in order to ensure success in this examination it is very important that you have a keen interest in food and are totally committed to the practical element of the course.

Please note that you cannot select Hospitality and Catering and Food Technology. Hospitality and Catering

What will I learn?

Much of the work will be of a practical nature involving the development of food preparation skills and the production of food that meets differing individual needs, is suitable for different situations/occasions and reflects current dietary trends. You will also learn more about the basic structure and functioning of the hospitality and catering industry and its role as a major employer. Food Safety and Hygiene form an important part of the Hospitality and Catering course and your knowledge and understanding of these topics will be assessed in a separate examination, as well as in the written papers taken during the course. If you are successful you will be awarded the Basic Food Hygiene Certificate.

What sort of homework will I be set?

Homework tasks will be set to support and extend work completed in class, as well as elements of the coursework units. Students are expected to organise ingredients/materials needed for all practical lessons and are actively encouraged to practise and develop their skills at home.

What coursework will I need to do?

Hospitality and CateringYou will need to complete Units 2 and 3 that relate to practically based activities and work related experiences.
In order to complete Unit 3 students must be prepared to opt for a Hospitality and Catering work placement when the whole of Year 10 go out on their experience of work, which is normally in March

How will my work be assessed?

Your final GCSE grade will depend upon how well you perform in each of the 4 compulsory units outlined below:

Unit 1 & Unit 4 2 x 1 hour written examination papers16.66% each
Unit 2A written record (portfolio) of two practically based activities 33.3%
Unit 3A written record (portfolio) of work related experiences 33.3%
