Art at GCSE builds upon the knowledge and skills that you will have learnt in years 7 to 9. It is a practical subject where your own ideas are important and you will be encouraged to express your thoughts and feelings in a creative and visual way.
What will I learn?
Art isn't just about painting and drawing. You will cover a wide range of topics and techniques. You will learn about art from different times and places around the world and you will learn many new skills. Some of the projects are:- Still-Life (painting, drawing and collage)
- Japanese Art (painting, calligraphy and printmaking)
- Aboriginal Art (batik)
- Objective Drawing (various 20 & 3D techniques)
- African Art (sculpture with wire and papier mache and clay).
- Portraits (various 20 & 3D techniques)
There will be visits to museums and art galleries to see important works of art.
What sort of homework will I be set?
Homework is set once a week and will be related to the work in class. Some times it will involve research on the Internet, other times it will be paintings, drawings and collages in your sketchbooks.What coursework will I need to do?
Your coursework starts from the very first lesson because all of the work that you do in class and for homework will count as part of your coursework. As your coursework is worth 60% of your final marks, it's really important to work as hard as possible in every single lesson - this will ensure that you will be successful in the final assessment.
How will my work be assessed?
During your final term you be given a copy of the exam paper and you will have eight school weeks in which to prepare for the two day practical exam. The marks for your coursework and your exam work will be combined together to form your GCSE grade. An examiner from the exam board will visit the school to assess your work.What qualification will I gain?
